Tips for Holding a Successful Garage Sale


With the busy selling season just around the corner, and for some of the areas here in Orange County it has already started, it’s time to clear out all the extra “stuff.” Here are a few tips to have a successful garage sale.

1) Don’t wait too long to schedule it. If you have lived in your home for a long time you don’t realize how much you have accumulated and it may take longer than expected.

2)Check with Neighbors to see if they want to join – Having a larger number of participants will bring more shoppers to your garage sale.

3)Set the date ahead - Best days for garage sales are Saturday and Sunday and they usually run from 7am. – noon but be prepared for the people that come before you are “open”

4)Advertise on Craig’s list and local community papers if you have them – Make sure to provide the date & times as well as the address. Make sure to let the buyers know what types of items you will be selling so you get the most likely buyers. On the day of the garage sale put out directional arrows and balloon’s if you area allows it.

5)Price your items ahead of time - Remember garage sales are suppose to be bargains no full retail.

6) Make sure only sale items are put out - You don’t want to accidently sell something you didn’t mean to. (Sometimes spouses are guilty of this to try and get rid of “stuff they don’t want around the home).

7) Have paper and plastic bags - Makesure to have bags they can carry the items away in.


8) Manage your money. Make a trip to the bank to get ample change for your cashbox. Throughout the sale, keep a close eye on your cash; never leave the cashbox unattended. It’s smart to have one person who manages the money throughout the day, keeping a tally of what was purchased and for how much. Keep a calculator nearby.


9)Donate the remaining stuff - Whatever you don’t sell donate so you don’t bring it back into the home.
If this seems like too much you can always check with a local realtor that works your area as many of them sponsor garage sales. You will still have to get your items ready but they can handle the advertising and promoting it as well as getting other neighbors to join.
