Fall is just around the corner and so is the start of the AYSO fall soccer season. It’s been a long time since I coached my daughter as she manned the goal and AYSO occupied space on my calendar but it does this year since I volunteered to be an assistant coach to an U8 AYSO team in Aliso Viejo.
The coaches’ training was one heck of a walk down memory lane! When my daughter first decided to play soccer many years ago there wasn’t enough coaches so unless us parents stepped up they wouldn’t have a team. I have to say back then I knew nothing about soccer. I played many sports throughout school and beyond but never soccer. But I figured how hard could it be to teach 5 year olds soccer since after all they probably know about as much as me. For 10 more years and many AYSO teams and club soccer teams later I learned the game and came to really enjoy the sport.
Now, driven by a combination of nostalgia and the desire to give back to the community, I look forward to our first practices, meeting all the girls and knocking off all the rust. I can’t wait to get involved and it’s a great opportunity to be a positive influence on these young girls. It’s about being good sports win or lose, teaching teamwork, respect and most of all having fun while they learn about the game.
